There is one

I'm not my own person. I am not me. How could that be? For 19 years of my life, I thought I was me. But now, the realization has hit me, hard. Nope, I am but one little part of a very big whole.

I ate my Shabbos meal in the old city, by a man named Gil Locks. All I can say is, you just have to have been there. It was definitely one of the more exciting experiences of my life. He has an amazing story, about how he discovered yidishkeit. I recommend reading his books. Google him.

One of the rules at his meal is, that if you ask him a lot of questions, he gives you one of his books as a reward. I got a book. I'm still shocked. No, I didn't ask the most questions, but maybe the most inquisitive. Or maybe he just sensed that I needed it. I saw it as a sign from G-d. And when I was flipping through the book, I noticed that there's a letter of recommendation in the front, and the date it was written was the 28th of Iyar, which fell out on friday this year. Yup, the day I got the book. Coincidence? I think not.

Life is a journey. Some people are on the right path, they know where they are headed, and how to get there. And some people are confused. I out myself in the latter group. But never fear, because there are people on this earth who are smarter than you, more experienced, and have been around for much longer.

Going back to what I said in the beginning- look at a body of water, and see the sun reflecting off of it. A gorgeous site that I love to watch. Now, look at the particles of light. How many little lights do you see? Your eyes see many, but in truth, it is just one, broken up into many, by the way the water moves. All these little lights are just a reflection of one much greater light, the sun.

These are not my own thoughts, but paraphrased from the book, 'There is One' by Gil Locks.

I will treasure that book, because it was a gift. But more importantly, it was given to ME. Someone believed in me enough to give it to me, to think that I should have it. I hope I can live up to that.

  6. I've never eaten by him, but I did hear his whole story, from the horse's mouth, when I was in Morristown a couple of years ago.
