Untitled

Do all posts have to be happy? Or meaningful? This is my one post a day as per TRS's instructions.

We just graduated. It's not an end, or a begining, just a middle. This is not a goodbye, but a graduation to newer and better things. Bla bla bla I've heard it all before, and I still think a sem graduation is pointless.

Yesterday my skirt got stuck in the escalater in the mall. What can I say? It was my shlumpy day, so I was wearing a long shlepy skirt. I was talking on the phone with my mother when suddenly I feel a tug, and look down to see my skirt being sucked into the dark recesses of the escalater stairs. Then theres a big noise, and the whole thing jammed. How cool is that, I jammed an escalater.

My reaction? I laughed. A group of people gathererd around me, talking and gesturing in hebrew. I asked my mother what to do, she said find a security guard. Ya, can't really move right now I'm stuck.

Some nice guy came over and tried to yank it out, while I frantically held on so it wouldnt fall down. No need for a bigger commotion. He asked me in hebrew if it was ok to cut the skirt. I said ya sure, as long as it meant I'd be free to go. Someone threw a scissor down the stairs, the guy snipped away, and me and my now shorter and slightly jagged skirt walked away, as the security guard stood there scratching his head, trying to figure out how to fix the damn thing. I left a wad of material still jammed in the escalater. And it was still broken a few hours later.... And to think that I did that. Cool.

Moral of the story? Don't wear shlumpy skirts, their not lady like. Don't talk on phone while operating machinery. Or just pick up your skirt and run down the stairs. Solves it all.

If all goes well, this will be my last blog post from the holy land (well for this year at least.) As I sit here in my principal's oh so comfy chair (sure hope she's not reading this) I don't want to leave. But I gotta go finish packing, go to a goodbye party, take some last pics, psyche myself up physically and emotionally for the flight.

So thats all for now folks. Hopefully will write tomorrow night, when I'm back in your time zone.

p.s. too lazy to put up a poll, but who thinks it's a good idea for me to re open my facebook account? Read this and tell me if I'm being hypocritical.

  1. Open up facebook again, just don't log in more than once a day.

  2. You typed this on your principals computer without your principal knowing? That's very brave of you.

  3. NO! You made a decision to quit facebook. Kol hakavod- now stick with it!
P.S.- good for you, using that computer takes guts!

E- it's addicting, once a day is like telling a chassan and kallah to talk for only five minutes. It doesn't and won't happen unless you literally pull them apart.

  4. Puhlease. I have 160 friends and now there are quizes too. I'm barely on. I respond to comments, occasionally comment and sometimes take a quiz if it's funny. Prob spend less than an hour total per day.

    Chanie's on fire.
Critical damage: fire does 200 points damage to Chanie.
    Chanie's dead.

    Problem solved.

  8. i usually have an interesting way of looking at things. but i have no idea wut u are talking abt sorry

  9. Your theory that as long as no one sees what you're doing it's ok to do it is a very interesting one.

    ReplyDelete
  10. o cmon! now u are the one who reads too deeply into everything. I am tired and im not gonna argue with you.

    so im dishonest. kill me

  11. Moshe, you're disgusting. Altie herself said that she feels freer now that she's not tied to Facebook. Let her keep her freedom and don't be a yetzer hara. She has enough trouble with the one she already has.

P.S.- we don't talk that way about Yidden, remember?

Moshe- you're sick, get out of here.

    What was a mistake, Altie?

  20. moshe, how exactly did she start it?

and altie, do i need to cite studies stating how bad facebook is for your social life? i can oblige if you like.

it basicaly cuts you off from real human contact - not remotely healthy.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Are these real studies or chareidi propaganda? From what I've seen, it improves your social life.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Moshe- I didn't start, I answered a question. You happened to have posted differently, but I didn't know that I wasn't allowed to disagree.

    Thanks, Yonason.... :)

  23. completely secular studies.

charedim would rather argue that the internet causes people harm.

    http://www.nhs.uk/news/2009/02February/Pages/Facebookhealthstudy.aspx

note this, and i would point out that his dismissal of the claims in this study is not so strong as he presents it. true the author has not directly linked facebook with social isolation, but he has done so by linking facebook with internet usage (100%) and by linking internet usage with increased isolation.

thus he then links social isolation with all of these evil things.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1, There is no mention of facebook in his paper.
2, He accuses both internet and TV of same thing.
3, His claims about TV are same even though TV has been around for half a century.
    4,
I work as an Internet Psychologist and I'm sorry to report that his conclusions are based on some jumps in logic and some poor data. Firstly, his data only goes up to 2007, yet the most substantial growth in social networking took place later than this. Secondly, he assumes that social networking site users spend their time at their PC without going out much. But the reverse is true. The most active social networking site users are the most active socially in the "real world". Indeed one of the most common uses of Facebook is to arrange face to face meetings, parties and the like. Instead of social networking sites reducing our face to face contact, they are in fact increasing the amount of human contact we have. As a result social networking sites improve your health, based on Dr Sigman's theory.
    - "Graham Jones"

I explained that he had cherry picked the evidence in his rather fanciful essay, selectively only mentioning the evidence that supports his case, and ignoring the evidence that goes against it.

Cherry picking is a common crime in the world of pseudoscience - whether it is big pharma or everyday cranks - and to me it is a serious crime against science, because by selectively quoting evidence, you can make almost anything seem either dangerous, or beneficial.

    - "Bad Science"

    And there are many more.

Any idiot can write a paper claiming anything he wants. He did not do research, he picked out points from others' research that agree with him and set that as proof of his theory.

  25. Hey altie, Love this story, so funny. Keep em commin. Ur really talented, and I am not just saying that cause ur my sister. (Although I might be a little jealous that u got all the writing genes. Just kidding.) I have been advertising ur blog 4 u. Hope it gets u more ppl. reading. Ttyl

  26. trs- good, guess i wont have to cower in fear thinking u are gonna come after me.

sarabonn- i'll let u know it.

chani- in moshes defense, he is not mean, just immature, and very blunt. i dont think u should take offense. but cute how ur chattan defends u.

yonasan, i will assume u dont have facebook. if u read my post against it, u will know that i agree with u 100% and thats why i regret reopening it. we'll see how long it lasts, but im currently under pressure to post my pics for all my friends, and to play bejeweled so some bored guy can win a laptop.

and u guys can argue all u want, but neither of u are right. its an opinion, whether or not facebook is 'bad'. each to his own.

thanks sis, i love the support!!

  31. id lose readers if i did funny, or if i stayed serious?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Um I meant if you stayed serious but I really didn't mean anything at all-I was just feeling the need to be as unintelligent as some other people :)

Best blogging advice I got? (Er ONLY blogging advice I got?) Only blog when you want to. I'll amend that to add 'and about what you want to'.

And now, for some REAL wisdom-
"To a humble person, the real measure of life isn’t which tools we’ve each been dealt; it’s what we’re doing with them.

So humility is a sense of responsibility: I need to be who G-d created me to be. Humility is when I’m not competing against others, but against my potential. Humility is a sense of always being conscious for new opportunities to be the best I can be. "

    ReplyDelete
  33. your advice is very practical and i do try to stick to it.

Humility is a hard trate to keep. But thanks, I shall try.

    ReplyDelete
  34. (The humility bit was NOT meant as anything "personal" to you regarding our little convo or any of your posts etc etc--twas just something I had been readin and felt like sharing.) (And now I must pray)

    ReplyDelete
  35. na i knew it wasnt meant for me, i just love having the spotlight on me.

thanks for sharing btw. i do love little spurts of wisdom. (that was said in total honesty.)

  38. Just met a gal who was journalizing in India. We spoke briefly about what it was like when "Mumbai" happened.

Now I just made this whole thing sad.

    I want Moshiach.

(and to the fifty ppl subscribed here-go do something good so he can come faster than he was supposed to. like today. thanks.)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yonason- true, I saw a similar study, not sure where.

Altie- a) you're right, he doesn't have Facebook (thank G-d) b) yeah, it is cute c) what Moshe said was not about blunt or immature, it was just plain rude. But from people of that sort you don't expect apologies. d) I think it's chaval that you reopened it.

    sabs- LOL.
