The horror

I'll tell you one thing- spreading my wings and flying is not as awesome as its made out to be.

So I'm all grown up now. I have a job, I make money. I'm independent. It feels great. (So my father pays my cell phone bill, so what?)

Suddenly, about a week ago, Father drops a bombshell on me. He will no longer be paying my cell phone bill. (Okay I can't breath.)

Now I am all on my own.

What to do?

Shop around for no contract cell phone plans. But there are so many. And all of them clain to be the best. Whom to believe?

By now I'm probably an expert.

Virgin mobile, $25/month unlimited text and web, but only 300 minutes. Or $40/month unlimited text and web, with 1200 minutes. Or $60/month unlimited everything.

Metro PCS- ranges from $40-$60/month, unlimited everything.

Boost- $50/month unlimited everything. They also offer a daily plan of just $2/day. Or a minute plan of 10 cents per minute.

Page plus- $29.95/month- 1,200 minutes/ 2,000 text/MMS messages/ 100 MB of Data. Or $44.95/month- unlimited talk and text, but only 20mb of data.

Why am I telling you all this?

Like any smart person would do, I decided to read the reviews on these plans. And I wonder, how can there be two totally different reviews on the same provider? One person praising it to the high heavens, saying it's the best deal he ever had. The next calling it evil and saying they stole his money.

And on and on.

So how do you decide? When there are so many options out there, how can one possibly decide?

It was so much simpler when my father paid the bill and I had my stupid old flip phone. Soon the smartphones will take over the world and my durable flip phone will become extinct.

And in the meantime, I will be without a cell phone once my father cancels his plan.

Oh the joys of growing up.

  1. Boost doesnt have any good phones.
    Virgin has pretty decent phones.
MetroPCS's data plan isnt complete. Metro web does not allow videos or downloads. To get that you need either the 50 / 60 dollar a month plan.
Page plus doesnt have much data.

My conclusion, virgin mobile 40$ a month plan. Best bang for your buck. I would go with the Optimus V as the phone.

  2. Youre like my very own nerd.

I narrowed it down to boost or VM, but I heard terrible things about boost customer service, and being charged twice, etc. Boost has a few nice phones.

Virgin does seem like the best, though I wish the $40/month would be unlimited everything instead of 60.

  3. :)

Boost really doesnt have any good phones. They carry 3 smart phones, the samsung prevail, the motorola i1, and the blackberry curve. The prevail is half decent, the i1 runs on the old android operating system, and the curve is a low end blackberry. Virgin on the other hand has the optimus v, which is one of the top mid range android phones, and will soon have the new Intercept, which should be a pretty good phone.

I happen not to use that many minutes on my phone. i do mostly web browsing and texting, for which the 40$ plan is perfect.

  4. What abt sprint's all in plans? Sprint sucks compared to Verizon but its prolly better than this crap - they have month to month plans now - u should check

  5. @ Cymbaline

The only way you can have a better price on a big network is if you have an old plan. To sign up now for the sprint plan that will have unlimited everything, will cost $90. They don't offer month to month plans, they send you to boost which is their prepaid carrier.

  7. Not really. its just that I am now moving back to the states for at least a month or two, so I have been looking into plans. In general I like reading cites like cnet and engadget, they are really informative.

  8. BTW - i totally feel ur pain. i'd die without Verizon and my trusty Android phone. Verizon is tons better than everythign else. but it's mad expensive.

  9. Verizon. Oh the good old days before i left the states. My family has a really old verizon plan, so its actually not that expensive.

  10. Flip Phones 4 life

Ask a friend who was in a similiar predicament?

  11. That's what I'm trying to do.

And I want a smartphone, if only to be able to check my email right when I get it.

  12. Ahhh, the joys of having your email come straight to your phone. Unequaled.

  13. If you are trying to make me jealous, it's not working.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Nope. Im not. Its a real convenience, but can get addicting. Heck, my phone is on and i am 'emailable' from 6 in the morning to 1 in the morning. If i get an email at 1230, i'll get outta bed and check it.

  15. I am aware of that. And yes that is one thing that worries me. Of course, self-control is a learnable trait. Try practicing it sometime.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ive thought of it, and decided to let it go. This is one of the only things in which i dont have complete self control. I figure i need it to stay normal.

I even thought about starting to tweet for a while, brushed the thought away, and more recently have began to once again consider it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Stay normal? Checking your email? You are worse off than I thought.

Oh nononononono, do not become a tweety bird. (I just thought that one up.) No. Tweeting is lame. It is not the way to go.

    Also a waste of time.

  18. Stay normal as in have a vice, have something that others can say, like wo dude, take a chill.

Also, this past year has been sorta crazy for me. Its been a year of solitude. Most of my buddies are elsewhere, and for the most part the ppl ive been hanging with are acquaintances from work. Email therefore gained much importance, as thats how i communicated with the outside world.

I think its actually pretty cool. You can make it fun. Last year pesach time i started an account under a random name, and tweeted randomness fr a month. at the end of the month i had some 45 followers. It felt oddly good to know that forty ppl read things like 'time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana'.

  19. oh g-d you sound like a lonely old man. Please get a life.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Im neither lonely, or an old man. Far from both.

Oh, I thank g-d have a great one going. Im living my dream (for the most part), and like u would say 'its all good'!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well good for you then.

Actually, I never say that. It just looks good on my profile.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes, thanks :)

Aww. Its a good line. Not one that i would use, but if its already on your profile, its worth saying.

  23. A friend pointed out that it fits with my name. In yidish- "Alts is gut"

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ha. So i guess its sold, its your official line.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The funny thing is, my attitude is so far from that.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I dunno. Its an attitude that over the years I have tried convincing myself of. Its sort of become who I am, to just let things go. They generally play out for the best. Last year at this time i was the most confused person in the world. I had no future plans, was completely lost. Over a beer with a couple friends, I realized, that something will have to come up, and it'll all just fall into place. B'h, it did. I am now in a great place, have great plans which i look forward to next year, etc. It just always seems to work, so just feeling that from the start saves you much anxiety.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I would never have guessed.

I am a firm believe of everything turning out as they should, but that doesnt make me more calm.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I just figure, if itll all work out, why make yourself unnecessarily nuts. Just have fun, do your part in making things be the best they can (have more fun, because that is half the way you do that) and it all just plays out.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Easy for you. i dont drink beer.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Actually, the real break through last year was not over beer, but a delicious ice cream. I was in Israel for Lag Baomer for my brother bar mitzva. My birthday is around lag baomer time. So me and my pop went out for ice cream @ Mamila (great place) and we sort of talked through the whole thing. Thats when the attitude fully imbedded itself within me. It was something I always tried and stuff, but that was the toughest situation I had ever had before,. I believed, let it go, and it all played out. Thats just sorta what i do now automatically

  31. Good for you.

Honestly, I hate optimistic people. Me, I am a pessimist through and through. Expect the worst, and when it actually works out you are pleasantly surprised.

    ReplyDelete
  32. We went through this whole thing in your post entitled Tomorrow. Being a pessimist would kill me. I would have major anxiety problems. I like thinking of myself as more of a realist than an optimist.

    ReplyDelete
  33. If we did then this conversation is pointless.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Well, not pointless, just slightly repetitive.

    ReplyDelete
  35. An attitude change does not happen overnight. And in my case, probably never happens. So good for you.

I really think it's something you are born with.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yah, but also something which can be developed and worked on. Ain dovor hooimaid bifnai harotzon. Its something which is tested and proven. One thing happens, and you can suddenly be like hey, light blub flash, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Jeez - get a room you two. Wasn;t this a post about cellphones??

    ReplyDelete
  38. lol. Ya, it sorta did go way off topic.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Happens on my blog all the time. That's the beauty of conversation. It goes wherever one takes it.
