So what REALLY goes on at 1414?

I pass by 1414 President street, one of the boys yeshiva dormitories in Crown Heights, every day. There are always guys outside smoking, talking on phones, or just hanging around. It makes me wonder: do they ever learn or get any real stuff done?

  1. Learn-- maybe.

Get any real stuff done-- never.

  2. you're generalizing. You assume the thirty guys you always see outside are a random sample of the hundreds who dorm there. Many good bochurim stay there, and of course they learn.

  3. you have a point. of course, it could also be that they dont do anything. maybe i should go inside and ask them.

  4. OTD, there is a statement by Yaroslav Hasek: “Jumping from a building in order to commit suicide is just bad manners. If you want to commit suicide, hang yourself quietly in the stables by your suspenders. Don’t make a commotion.”

  7. i dont think that was his point. he seemed to be saying, you disagree and want to mock people, fine, but dont do it in public.

  8. A) He didn't say that.

    B) who I am mocking and disagreeing with?

    Good Lord.

  10. You're right. Suicide advice is just friendly banter.

    I won't be back.

  11. Do you pass by at different times, or at the same time?

  12. i happen to pass by the same time every day. around 1:30. could be they have a break then, who knows.

  13. Firstly, you must decide what you call "real stuff". If you and them have different goals, you're talking along the wrong lines. Secondly, is it their fault that you can only see
    1. the non-learners,
    2. the learners when they aren't learning?

I'd assume the boys have the same questions about the girls...

  14. well real stuff for bocherim in yeshiva would be learning. and mivtzoyim. and other good stuff.

you have a point. i should give people the benefit of the doubt, and not make jokes about it when i clearly dont really care one way or another.

  15. Lol that is a FUNNY quote. Altie - they know you come around every day, they hang out on purpose. *straight face*

  16. lol. that's the best explanation yet.

  17. I meant if you’re going to fry out (= “commit suicide”), don’t make a big noise about it and pull everyone with you. Just quietly fry out and move along. Some people seem to want to make everyone else fry if they fried out.

Honestly, I have no idea where my comment came from (judging from the context), so if I hurt someone’s feelings, I apologize.
